Santo Tomás de Cori fue un sacerdote italiano de la orden franciscana conocido por su estilo claro y simple de predicar. Pasó la mayor parte de su vida religiosa dedicado a la oración, centrada en la celebración y contemplación de la Eucaristía.
En su Misa de canonización, San Juan Pablo II se refirió a él de la siguiente manera: “fue imagen viva del buen Pastor. Como guía amoroso, supo conducir a los hermanos encomendados a su cuidado hacia las verdes praderas de la fe, animado siempre por el ideal franciscano”.
Nació en Cori (Italia) el 4 de junio de 1655. A los 14 años quedó huérfano al cuidado de sus dos hermanas.
Cuando tuvo arreglado un modo decoroso de vida para las dos, ingresó a los franciscanos a los 22 años. Tomó el hábito como clérigo el 7 de febrero de 1677 bajo el nombre de Tomás y profesó al año siguiente el 8 de febrero.
Tras la profesión y finalizados los estudios de teología, fue ordenado sacerdote en 1683. Fue nombrado inmediatamente vice maestro de novicios en el convento de la Santísima Trinidad de Orvieto.
Su nombre está unido principalmente a los retiros en la Orden Franciscana. Las Constituciones actuales de estos retiros, escritos por él, le costaron veinte años de estudio, oración y sacrificios.
Su fama de santidad suscitó que muchos religiosos y cristianos laicos acudieran a él a pedir consejo. Su predicación era de una claridad y sencillez tales que conmovía los corazones de aquellos que acudían a escucharlo y se veían impulsados a reconciliarse con Dios y a vivir la fe intensamente.
Hizo muchos milagros durante su vida, tuvo el don de profecía, frecuentes éxtasis, apariciones del Señor, de la Virgen y de San Francisco de Asís. Leía claramente en el corazón de los que acudían a él.
Murió después de una larga jornada en el confesionario el 11 de enero de 1729. Fue canonizado por San Juan Pablo II el 21 de noviembre de 1999.
